In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to bind them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

And indeed the time has come to retire the Mother of All Apple II Web Rings. In an email sent to all ring members on 24 December, I posted this message:

Subj: Shutting down the Apple II Web Ring

I've decided to shut down the Apple II Web Ring. The host site at www.webring.org is broken, with navigation code and the site database constantly generating errors. There is no support coming from wearing.org - it gives every appearance of being abandoned. In addition, I'm seeing member sites on the ring that have been compromised (hacked) in one way or another, with php exploits looking to be more common than anything else. That means that in a very real sense, the Apple II Web Ring may be serving to spread these hacks - an unacceptable situation.

It has been a good run over the past twenty years, but it’s become clear that it’s time to pull the plug!

Regards,

David Kerwood
